Personas Hondureñas: Meet Zury Pineda, Educator at the Villa Soleada Children’s Home

Meet Zury Pineda, Educator at the Villa Soleada Children’s Home

“I was born here in the city of El Progreso. I have 2 older brothers and a little sister. We lived in P. neighborhood nearly all of our lives. Until 2 years ago, we had to practically leave running from the city because of extortion. At that time, we lived in Tela. I was working at Romulo School. I had to quit my job, and my sister had to leave school. We decided to move back after hearing that the people who were extorting us had been captured.

I am a primary school teacher. I studied and lived in Trujillo for 3 years. Then, I returned and started working in schools. Since I was a child, I wanted to be a teacher. I remember that our kindergarten teacher asked us what we wanted to be when we were older. I told her I wanted to be a teacher. I always liked working and being with children while I was in school. That’s why when I finished in Trujillo, I enrolled at the university to study Educational Psychology but I could not finish for financial reasons. I hope to continue school next year. My sister is finishing school, and I have been assisting her with her school expenses. I want to continue working here so I will study on the weekends. I have 2 to 3 more years of school.

I began to work here thanks to Ms. Yalena, Director of the Children’s Home. I met her when she was working at Romulo School. She was a psychologist and told me that she also worked here at the Home. I started visiting and coming to the Children’s Home. In 2017, Yalena called me because they needed help here, and I began to start working here on January 8th. This work has been teaching me many things. It is a challenge every day, and I love it.
