IT’S SIMPLE. THERE ARE 1000 VILLAGES IN NEED OF A SCHOOL BUILDING.
Hondurans are already investing in Education, we’re just there to lend a hand.
We work with local leaders to build schools, classrooms, latrines, and water systems. Currently, we work with public and community-run primary schools in northern Honduras (also known as PROHECO schools). Our organization provides all construction supplies and professional labor.
In exchange, the parents in the community provide all of the unskilled labor in the form of sweat equity. Each family also donates cinderblocks to the project. The families are involved in the decision-making process and construction from beginning to end to ensure maximum buy-in and ownership from the community.
The Honduran government sends the teachers to the facilities and pays their salaries through the PROECHO program. The local government lends us their heavy machinery for free at any of our sites, as well as truckloads of sand to mix cement. They also send military security for all volunteer trips.
WE’VE ALREADY BUILT 21 SCHOOLS
FIND OUT HOW
VOLUNTEERS BREAK GROUND ON A SCHOOL DURING TRIPS.
THEY RAISE THE MONEY TO FINISH IT. MORE VOLUNTEERS COME, MORE SCHOOLS GET BUILT.
The “Train for Change” program, led by our project manager Maxie Gluckman, will train teachers that serve in many of the most impoverished villages across Honduras. After a decade of work, Students Helping Honduras will have completed the construction of 32 school buildings by the end of 2016. “Train for Change” aims to increase educational outcomes for the students in these new buildings by empowering local leaders to train their teachers with the skills they need to raise the next generation of Honduran leaders. As we work to reach our goal of 1000 schools, this new team be working alongside us creating system wide change for over 1 million students.
